Massage and Skin Care During Treatment for Cancer

The skin is affected on the superficial level when lotion is applied during massage.  Certain essential oil, vitamins, fat-soluble hormones and fatty substances such as creams and oils, can be absorbed through the pores and hair follicles.  A safe massage with superior ingredients gives much needed moisture back to the skin during treatment. It is always important to consult with your physician for the most appropriate role for massage in the treatment process. Always have available a list of ingredients of your lotions for patients.

The side effects of chemotherapy and radiation treatment that cause the skin to become dehydrated and irritated are not considered life threatening.  However, it is very important for a patient to have the information concerning safe skincare so that they look and feel their best during treatment.  Always make sure that you use the highest quality productst that nourish, rehydrate and moisturize the skin during treatment for cancer.

A new field, Oncology Aesthetics, has emerged to help the patients with the skin problems associated with chemotherapy and radiation treatment.  Just as Oncology Massage Therapist have eduated themselves to ensure the safest massage possible for patients, training is now available for skin care.  Recently I completed training for Oncology Aesthetics.  It is possible to offer patients safe facials using appropriate products. Combining  the facial with a gentle shoulder, hand and foot  massage, offers a truly relaxing experience that may help with fatigue, anxiety and pain control.
